Vera Project call to artists/designers...

The Vera Project (Vera) non-profit, all-ages art and music venue located in the Seattle Center is hosting its annual Bring It, Screen It/Bazaar on December 6, 2008.

Bring It, Screen It is a fundraising event Vera puts on every year where silk screen artists can submit a Vera Project logo, and community members can pick their favorites from the bunch to screen on whatever articles of clothing they bring (or buy at the event) for just $5! Along with the screening event will also be a Bazaar for craft artists to sell their wares.

All proceeds go directly to Vera's silk screen program to ensure that it remains open, available, and low cost for the greater Seattle art community!

In order for this event to be successful, we need artists and designs. If you are interested in submitting a design, or if you know anyone who is interested in submitting a design, please email me. Feel free to forward this call to any artists you know who may be interested as well. Any one is welcome to submit!

Here are the basic logo guidelines:

  • Designs must include "Vera" or "Vera Project" somewhere in the design.
  • Content of designs must be suitable for general audiences.
  • Designs will end up being screened in one color only for ease of printing, especially for inexperienced screeners, so color should not be a main factor.
  • Dimensions need be no bigger than 8.5 X 11.
  • Be aware that these designs are donated to Vera. Since this is a fundraiser, artists will not be paid.
  • Designs are due by NOVEMBER 21ST.

Contact fundraising@theveraproject.org if you are interested in submitting a design...

Help save the planet. Join the Aspen Design Challenge

AIGA | the professional association for design

AIGA is inviting faculty, students and recent graduates to participate in the Aspen Design Challenge, an annual call to students worldwide to help solve global issues.

The inaugural contest, “Designing Water’s Future,” challenges cross-disciplinary student teams to develop design solutions that encourage responsible water use, provide access to freshwater to those in need and increase awareness about the importance of water conservation.

The rules and guidelines are now available on the Aspen Design Challenge website. Winners will have the opportunity to refine and develop their concepts with world leaders and policy makers at the Aspen Environment Forum, and their solutions will be discussed during the World Summit on Climate Change.

Print design, web applications, environmental design, physical devices, data presentation tools and other approaches are all accepted. Design students are encouraged to lead teams that may also include engineers, artists, ethnographers, anthropologists and scientists, and to consider the social, cultural and scientific significance of water use.

For more information, visit www.aspendesignchallenge.org.

The Aspen Design Challenge and Aspen Design Summit are presented in partnership between AIGA and INDEX:. This year's challenge, “Designing Water’s Future,” is a collaboration of Circle of Blue and COLLINS:.

Let us know if you will be participating by sending an email to aspenchallenge@aiga.org. Submissions are due by December 15, 2008.

Gallery Opening @ BLVD

BLVD Gallery proudly presents
"Disconnected"
New paintings and Prints by Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck
September 12 – October 4, 2008
Artist Reception Sept 12, 2008 6p - 10p

BLVD Gallery
2316 2nd Ave.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Disconnected” a showing of new works
by frequent collaborators Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck. Both of these
artists work maintain a dark, somewhat brooding atmosphere that speaks
toward the vulnerability of the modern condition..The characters in
Marco Zamora’s densely populated street scenes, created with layered
ink washes, glide through the frame intent on their destinations
without giving the viewer any sense of inclusion. Derek Albecks richly
patterned works create a vertiginous feeling of falling and of physical
absence that overwhelms ones senses. Both artists have collaborated on
major projects with the shoe manufacturer Vans as well as various
exhibitions throughout the west coast.
Marco Zamora was born and currently lives and works in Pomona,
California. In 2004 he graduated from California Institute of the Arts,
with a Bachelor of Fine Art. Using the paintbrush and pen to draw,
Marco develops imagery about the urban landscape and the people that
inhabit it. Producing a richly complex and experimental image, Marco
goes into a neighborhood and shoots a spot, recontectualizing and
collaging figures to create each paintings identity. City life, his
culture, color/scale experimentation, and the working class have
influenced his artwork. Splitting his time between painting and apparel
design, Marco's recent work can be seen in a variety of Van's ads and
collaboration projects as well as galleries up and down the west coast
Derek Albeck was born in the San Fernando Valley of Southern
California, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2005 he
graduated with honors from California State University Northridge with
a Bachelors in Art, focusing on printmaking and painting. Developing
complex figurative works using the graphic sensibilities absorbed from
his studies in the various forms of printmaking, Derek's paintings,
drawings and serigraphs serve as an intense investigation and critique
on the human condition. Derek's work has been exhibited in galleries
along the west coast as well as Canada and the U.K., and was recently
included in the Vans Sky Gallery billboard project.

Job search tips by Jade Gordon

Something that accelerates my job hunting is using Google Reader.

http://www.google.com/reader/

This is a "news reader" (You don't HAVE to use Google, there are other
news/feed readers). Essentially, a reader collects posts from blogs and
other sites set up to supply "feeds", and puts them all in one spot. I
made a "Jobs" category in my reader. Here are some of the places that have
feeds with Graphic Design job listings (even if only once in a while).

http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=graphic+designer&l=seattle&from=rss
This is actually a site that collects listings from various places and
serves them in feed format.

http://marketplace.nwsource.com/jobs/
Seattle Times listings. You would have to input your own search criteria,
and get it's own feed.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/Coroflot/AllJobs
Coroflot

http://www.designspongeonline.com/jobboard/
Design Sponge

http://feeds.feedburner.com/GamasutraJobs
Primarily for the Video Game and animation fields, every so often, they
look for Graphic Designers here.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/med/
Yes, all the categories of Craig's List have their own feeds!

I'm always looking for more places to add! A lot of sites I still have to
check manually, especially those that have complicated search functions as
the main way to check listings. I wish the temp agencies I joined would
use this too, it would make things so much simpler. The main advantage
other than the aggregation is speed. These are all "live" feeds, which
means I can see things relatively close to posting time. I mostly live on
the feeds right now, and you might even find a lot of listings get pulled
fairly quickly because they get a lot of responses from it. I like to try
to be one of those first responses!

Anyway, the advantage of school and attending all the events you can is
the in-person networking, and that is always going to be more valuable.
Still, it can be a good idea to keep an eye on the listings, watch for
trends, and so on. I find that this speeds things up, and I probably spend
about 75% less time reading listings with this advantage of a more
one-stop method.

AIGA | the professional association for design

As Hurricane Gustav threatens New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, AIGA is mobilizing the community once again to help designers who may be displaced from homes and businesses.

Weston McWhorter, the New Orleans chapter president, has alerted the local board to ways in which the national organization can help. While we are unable to offer relief services or displacement funding, we are able to provide connections between designers whose lives are turned upside down and those able to help.

After Katrina, AIGA’s Leave No Designer Behind initiative sought to make contact with all designers in the area to check on their safety and needs. By mid-week, AIGA and Chopping Block will reactivate the DisplacedDesigners.com site to provide advice and matching of needs and support. This assistance applies to all designers, not just AIGA members.

For those in the path of Hurricane Gustav
Please keep your chapter informed when your plans become clear so that we can account for our members; contact Wes at president@neworleans.aiga.org if you are in Louisiana or your local chapter president elsewhere in the affected area. You can also contact relief@aiga.org.

For those eager to help
Please consider how you might help those leaving the affected area, in terms of housing or studio space during any relocation period. When DisplacedDesigner.com becomes reactivated, you will be able to alert us to ways in which you can help. Following Katrina, designers were able to offer housing, studio space, new jobs and equipment for displaced members.

Immediate contacts
The national coordinator on staff will be Spencer Bruce (212 807 1990 or relief@aiga.org). We will provide an update when the website is available and initial reports are in.

The power of our community of designers is what we can do individually but, even more important, what we can do together.

Seattle-Tehran Poster Show
Curator's Preview

Thursday, August 28 | Doors 6:30pm, Lecture 7:00pm
Starbucks Corporate Offices | 2401 Utah Ave S. Seattle

Building on the success of The Seattle-Havana Poster Show (2007-2008), curator Daniel R. Smith has gone half way around the world to unite the graphic design communities of Seattle and Tehran. The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show debuts at Bumbershoot, Seattle's Music and Arts Festival. Artists included range from Reza Abedini, a powerful figure in contemporary Iranian graphic design, to younger talents born since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. These Iranian designers' posters are paired with the work of Seattle designers, such as Robynne Raye of Modern Dog, Coby Schultz and Barry Ament of Ames Bros and many more.

Please join AIGA Seattle to view a sneak preview of this inspiring show, and hear the stories behind it. Daniel will be joined by Mamoun Sakkal, who will be sharing his extensive knowledge of Arabic typography and calligraphic forms--providing a deeper appreciation of the poster art.

Daniel R. Smith is a Seattle-based artist and designer who has worked as a graphic designer and art director for firms including NBBJ Architecture, Starbucks Coffee and Experience Music Project. Mamoun Sakkal is an internationally recognized graphic designer, architect, artist and teacher who has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

Words from the Prez...

So, we need to get some thank yous and some posters made. Jodie has thankfully volunteered to supply us with finger paint, glitter, colored pipe cleaners, eyeballs and neon poster board so we can accomplish this. We are finger painting this wednesday. COME. THERE WILL BE CANDY.

Melanie / David, is there any way for us to get some large format roll paper? Or some butcher paper or something.

Also, Dave Peacock, our AIGA man, will be coming by Week 7. He will be bringing Sean Bolan, their new Education Programming Director with him. He has doled out responsibilities to me for the Wexley Shindig. They are:

Responsibilities: AiS
•Produce the posters and promote the event at AiS. Make sure to let all the professors know about it so they can schedule accordingly. Sean and I will also need to have some posters to distribute at the various schools in the area.

Whoever designs the poster will also need to reformat the graphic for our email blast (I will get you exact pixel dimensions later.)

•As with the Chantry event, AiS will need to plan for student volunteers to run the admission table, and also see that our speakers are taken care of. Some water and a tray of snacks for the waiting room would be great (these items can be expensed). Sean and I will both be at the event to help make sure everything runs smoothly.

Responsibilities: AIGA
•AIGA will send out email blasts to our mailing list (we will plan to do this one month before and again two weeks before)
•AIGA will promote the event at area schools
•AIGA will set up advance ticket sales through the AIGA web site.

As far as dates are concerned, the most important is to have the posters and email graphic done a month in advance so we can properly promote the event. So lets plan for September 23 to be the date to have all of that stuff ready.

So, important things to know. Sep 23 is the day that the poster needs to be done. So ideally, I would like to have the poster due by the end of this quarter so Wexley has time to pick a winner before the 23rd.

The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show
Connecting Two Cities through Graphic Design

Historic exhibit brings contemporary graphic design from Tehran to the U.S. for the first time

July 15, 2008 (Seattle, Wash.)—The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show unites Americans and Iranians with poster art; this show is the first time that the U.S. has hosted an exhibition with Tehran designers. The exhibit, curated by graphic designers Daniel R. Smith of Seattle and Iman Raad of Tehran, debuts at Bumbershoot ®, Seattle’s Music and Arts Festival during Labor Day weekend at the Seattle Center. A list of confirmed artists is on the last page.

“[This show] is a true visual discourse between the two cities, far apart, at different corners of the Globe...” Raad says. “We'll make every effort to keep the show unaffected by current frigid political settings, without pretending that our two countries are tightly knit, as either case may strip this dialogue of its freshness and appeal.”

The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show includes 50 posters from Seattle and Tehran that represent the thriving graphic arts communities of these two disparate cities. From silkscreen to off-set and digital prints, the posters share cultural themes such as music, film, theater and contemporary art.

“This exhibit is a valuable step in showing members of each other’s larger communities how we truly think and feel,” says Smith. “It humanizes the other side and demonstrates not simply a willingness to reach out to one another, but a concrete example of how to do so.”

Shortly after its Bumbershoot debut, The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show Remix will open at Design Commission, a graphic design firm and gallery located at the Tashiro Kaplan building in Pioneer Square. Visit www.seattletehran.com for more information on this event.

Post-revolutionary designers
Most of the Tehran designers were born in 1979, or later, and grew up knowing only a post-revolutionary Iran. The artists range from Tehran University Professor Reza Abedini, a powerful figure in contemporary Iranian graphic design, to younger talents born since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, such as the female design duo Soha Shirvani and Reyhaneh Sheikhbahaei.

These Iranian designers’ posters are paired with the work of contemporary Seattle designers, such as Cornish College Professor Robynne Raye of Modern Dog, Coby Schultz and Barry Ament of the Ames Bros and many more.

“Their design work is quite different from anything being produced in the States, at least on the surface,” Smith says.

The Road to Tehran Began in Havana
The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show is the second poster show linking Seattle poster art with another city; The Seattle-Havana Poster Show premiered last year at Bumbershoot ® and opened last April in Havana, where the show is permanently residing.

It was in Cuba when Smith thought of engaging with the graphic design community of Iran.

“It was so easy for me to get into Cuba, meet graphic designers, and set up a collaborative poster show,” Smith says. “I needed a bigger challenge. I wanted to go somewhere more difficult, so I thought about Iran.”

Smith travelled to Tehran with the Fellowship of Reconciliation group and connected with several graphic designers about producing The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show. He received a great response to the idea of the show from a group of loosely associated designers, many of whom were recent graduates of Tehran University.

“Contrary to what we might assume, the Iranians were not just excited to meet Amercians; they were hungry for an on-going connection, a real dialogue. The greater challenge of traveling to Iran resulted in a better, even timelier exhibit,” Smith says.

The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show will be available in person in Seattle on Labor Day weekend, or online at www.seattletehran.com.

About the Curators
The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show is a collaborative effort between two curators/graphic designers, Seattle's Daniel R. Smith and Tehran's Iman Raad. Their goal is to expose the general public in both cities to each other's design work and communities; ultimately humanizing each side in a time of extremely high tensions.

Daniel R. Smith is a Seattle-based artist and designer. He organized The Seattle-Havana Poster Show for Bumbershoot 2007 in Seattle and later opened in 2008 at el Centro Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales in Havana, Cuba. In addition, he designed Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher's "Learning to Love You More" exhibition for Bumbershoot 2007. Smith graduated from the University of Washington in 1994 with a BFA in Graphic Design and a BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts. He has worked as a graphic designer and art director for several Seattle firms including NBBJ Architecture, Starbucks Coffee, Experience Music Project | Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, GiftCertificates.com and Realogics. National design awards include selection for The American Center for Design’s 19th Annual 100 Show, and first place in the American Association of Museum’s Design Competition, poster category, 2004. His fine artwork has been shown locally at the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA), Linda Farris Gallery, and Bellevue Art Museum. His work has been chosen for inclusion in Seattle City Light’s public art collection and Experience Music Project’s permanent collection.

Cool wHip........

Just got back from grocery run. I saw the new Cool Whip in a can and love the fact that their cap is in the shape of a dollop of the tasty goodness contained inside. It's nice package design. And of course after seeing it I could not get the following scene from Family Guy out of my head:

Apologies for taking so long....

It has been a while since the last post. We went on break, while the rest of the design world moved on I actually got a vacation. We are back, so I will be trying to post regularly again. Not sure if you have heard, but Steven Heller has an email newsletter through print that's pretty cool. You can sign up for it at http://blog.printmag.com/dailyheller/ or just visit that site everyday.

Cheers,
DG
