An Evening with Wexley School for Girls

An Evening with Wexley School for Girls

Tuesday, October 21 | 6-7:30pm
Henry Art Gallery | 15th Ave NE & NE 41st St, Seattle

To the founders of The Wexley School for Girls, Ian Cohen and Cal McAllister, everything is advertising: traditional media, design, packaging, PR-generating ideas, video games, branded entertainment, short films, guerilla tactics and events. Join us as Ian and Cal present selected examples of their sometimes strange and always eye-catching work, and talk about their unique approach to advertising and design.

Founded in 2003, The Wexley School for Girls has grown into one of Seattle's most talked-about agencies, with a reputation for creating innovative work that often extends beyond the traditional confines of print and TV. Their diverse roster of clients includes Microsoft, Nike, ESPN, Virgin Mobile, Washington Mutual, K2 and more. Among other accolades, The Wexley School for Girls was recently named to Inc. Magazine's Top 100 Fastest Growing Advertising and Marketing Companies in America. As youngsters Ian and Cal dreamed of spending their day at a girl's school, and now they've finally made that dream come true. Help save the planet. Join the Aspen Design Challenge

AIGA | the professional association for design

AIGA is inviting faculty, students and recent graduates to participate in the Aspen Design Challenge, an annual call to students worldwide to help solve global issues.

The inaugural contest, “Designing Water’s Future,” challenges cross-disciplinary student teams to develop design solutions that encourage responsible water use, provide access to freshwater to those in need and increase awareness about the importance of water conservation.

The rules and guidelines are now available on the Aspen Design Challenge website. Winners will have the opportunity to refine and develop their concepts with world leaders and policy makers at the Aspen Environment Forum, and their solutions will be discussed during the World Summit on Climate Change.

Print design, web applications, environmental design, physical devices, data presentation tools and other approaches are all accepted. Design students are encouraged to lead teams that may also include engineers, artists, ethnographers, anthropologists and scientists, and to consider the social, cultural and scientific significance of water use.

For more information, visit www.aspendesignchallenge.org.

The Aspen Design Challenge and Aspen Design Summit are presented in partnership between AIGA and INDEX:. This year's challenge, “Designing Water’s Future,” is a collaboration of Circle of Blue and COLLINS:.

Let us know if you will be participating by sending an email to aspenchallenge@aiga.org. Submissions are due by December 15, 2008.

Gallery Opening @ BLVD

BLVD Gallery proudly presents
"Disconnected"
New paintings and Prints by Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck
September 12 – October 4, 2008
Artist Reception Sept 12, 2008 6p - 10p

BLVD Gallery

BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Disconnected” a showing of new works
by frequent collaborators Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck. Both of these
artists work maintain a dark, somewhat brooding atmosphere that speaks
toward the vulnerability of the modern condition..The characters in
Marco Zamora’s densely populated street scenes, created with layered
ink washes, glide through the frame intent on their destinations
without giving the viewer any sense of inclusion. Derek Albecks richly
patterned works create a vertiginous feeling of falling and of physical
absence that overwhelms ones senses. Both artists have collaborated on
major projects with the shoe manufacturer Vans as well as various
exhibitions throughout the west coast.
Marco Zamora was born and currently lives and works in Pomona,
California. In 2004 he graduated from California Institute of the Arts,
with a Bachelor of Fine Art. Using the paintbrush and pen to draw,
Marco develops imagery about the urban landscape and the people that
inhabit it. Producing a richly complex and experimental image, Marco
goes into a neighborhood and shoots a spot, recontectualizing and
collaging figures to create each paintings identity. City life, his
culture, color/scale experimentation, and the working class have
influenced his artwork. Splitting his time between painting and apparel
design, Marco's recent work can be seen in a variety of Van's ads and
collaboration projects as well as galleries up and down the west coast
Derek Albeck was born in the San Fernando Valley of Southern
California, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2005 he
graduated with honors from California State University Northridge with
a Bachelors in Art, focusing on printmaking and painting. Developing
complex figurative works using the graphic sensibilities absorbed from
his studies in the various forms of printmaking, Derek's paintings,
drawings and serigraphs serve as an intense investigation and critique
on the human condition. Derek's work has been exhibited in galleries
along the west coast as well as Canada and the U.K., and was recently
included in the Vans Sky Gallery billboard project.

Job search tips by Jade Gordon

Something that accelerates my job hunting is using Google Reader.

http://www.google.com/reader/

This is a "news reader" (You don't HAVE to use Google, there are other
news/feed readers). Essentially, a reader collects posts from blogs and
other sites set up to supply "feeds", and puts them all in one spot. I
made a "Jobs" category in my reader. Here are some of the places that have
feeds with Graphic Design job listings (even if only once in a while).

http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=graphic+designer&l=seattle&from=rss
This is actually a site that collects listings from various places and
serves them in feed format.

http://marketplace.nwsource.com/jobs/
Seattle Times listings. You would have to input your own search criteria,
and get it's own feed.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/GamasutraJobs
Primarily for the Video Game and animation fields, every so often, they
look for Graphic Designers here.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/med/
Yes, all the categories of Craig's List have their own feeds!

I'm always looking for more places to add! A lot of sites I still have to
check manually, especially those that have complicated search functions as
the main way to check listings. I wish the temp agencies I joined would
use this too, it would make things so much simpler. The main advantage
other than the aggregation is speed. These are all "live" feeds, which
means I can see things relatively close to posting time. I mostly live on
the feeds right now, and you might even find a lot of listings get pulled
fairly quickly because they get a lot of responses from it. I like to try
to be one of those first responses!

Anyway, the advantage of school and attending all the events you can is
the in-person networking, and that is always going to be more valuable.
Still, it can be a good idea to keep an eye on the listings, watch for
trends, and so on. I find that this speeds things up, and I probably spend
about 75% less time reading listings with this advantage of a more
one-stop method.

AIGA | the professional association for design

As Hurricane Gustav threatens New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, AIGA is mobilizing the community once again to help designers who may be displaced from homes and businesses.

Weston McWhorter, the New Orleans chapter president, has alerted the local board to ways in which the national organization can help. While we are unable to offer relief services or displacement funding, we are able to provide connections between designers whose lives are turned upside down and those able to help.

After Katrina, AIGA’s Leave No Designer Behind initiative sought to make contact with all designers in the area to check on their safety and needs. By mid-week, AIGA and Chopping Block will reactivate the DisplacedDesigners.com site to provide advice and matching of needs and support. This assistance applies to all designers, not just AIGA members.

For those in the path of Hurricane Gustav
Please keep your chapter informed when your plans become clear so that we can account for our members; contact Wes at president@neworleans.aiga.org if you are in Louisiana or your local chapter president elsewhere in the affected area. You can also contact relief@aiga.org.

For those eager to help
Please consider how you might help those leaving the affected area, in terms of housing or studio space during any relocation period. When DisplacedDesigner.com becomes reactivated, you will be able to alert us to ways in which you can help. Following Katrina, designers were able to offer housing, studio space, new jobs and equipment for displaced members.

Immediate contacts
The national coordinator on staff will be Spencer Bruce (212 807 1990 or relief@aiga.org). We will provide an update when the website is available and initial reports are in.

The power of our community of designers is what we can do individually but, even more important, what we can do together.
