Reality Check

April 26th, 2008

Participants will receive four to five reviews, probably more!

Free events at SVC!!!!!

FREE! The Art of Sub Pop
Next Tuesday, 3/25, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A free event, but online pre-registration is required
If you're familiar with the work of Jeff Kleinsmith and Dusty Summers, then you already know how they've pretty much single-handedly (dual-handedly?) shaped the music design world hereabouts. Their posters, apparel, and packaging work for Mudhoney, The Shins, Wilco, and Death Cab for Cutie, among others, have set a graphic style that's been widely admired and imitated.

FREE! The Secret to Happy Clients
Next Wednesday, 3/26, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A free event, but online pre-registration is required
It sounds obvious: if your clients are happy, you'll do better work, build your reputation, and make more money. But are there actually steps you can follow that lead to client bliss? Absolutely. And Patricia Belyea of the design firm bearing her name -- someone who's been making clients delirious for two decades -- will share them with you.

FREE! The Killer Interview (And How to Avoid Interview Killers)
Next Thursday, 3/27, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A free event, but online pre-registration is required
You aren't going anywhere if you can't represent yourself well in an interview. Fortunately, some people who have sat through thousands of them, Stefanie Matsudaira and Vivian Veraguth of Filter, will share tips on how to improve your interviewing style, create a winning resume, and put together a marketable portfolio. Bring yours for breakout sessions where Filter talent reps will gently critique your portfolio, web site, resume and your other marketing materials.

Get Out the Vote 2008

AIGA invites designers from across the United States to create nonpartisan posters that inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote for a presidential candidate in the 2008 general election. If you are an AIGA member, you can contribute your own design now.

Get Out the Vote, an AIGA initiative since the 2000 election campaign, enables designers to engage in the public arena by contributing to a coordinated voter mobilization campaign. The 2008 campaign will build on the efforts made in 2004 campaign, which placed more than 50,000 AIGA posters in public places in communities across the nation and gave access to online PDF versions that anyone could print and post independently.

By motivating eligible individuals to register and turn out on election day, Get Out the Vote fulfills an ongoing AIGA objective of demonstrating the value of design to the public, public officials and business by providing a clear call to action for an activity that is important to everyone.

Freelance opportunity....

Hello all,

Below is an email that I received recently from some one looking for logo work.

Hi David, I have a small side business creating websites and am currently working on a project where I would need a logo designed for a client. I have limited design skills, so I thought I’d inquire to see what kind of support I can get from students. Most of what I do does not pay tons, which is fine for me since I have a stable full time job. I mainly use the side business to keep up experience and get a little extra cash here and there. I may be able to pay for some work, but my hope is to find someone who wants to build a portfolio and wants to get some real world exposure. I don’t know how many opportunities students have for this kind of thing and I understand if most only want regular paying jobs, but I thought it would be good to ask. Do you know of someone that would be interested in helping with projects like this? Potentially I could use someone in the future if they work out. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions. Thanks, Marty Mickelson

Sagmeister was awesome....

For those of you who missed the most awesome presentation of the year...I was able to shoot video and even got permission from the man himself to post it on the interwebs for all to enjoy. It gave me an opportunity to test my point and shoot that allegedly shoots "DVD" quality video. I have dumped it to my laptop and am converting the awesomeness for YouTube. I will note, my camera does not shoot "DVD" quality video after all. Doh!
