Makin' it quick:

1 - AIGA Competition: It's on! It's on and POPPIN'! And now we need some design to make it work! You have 36 hours to think about it, sketch some ideas, play with some suggestions, and come to club with an open mind prepared to nail down some awesome design!

2 - The Mural: This quarter is already at the winding down stage and we need to get a proposal written up, and we can't do that without the actual design! (I know; weird, right?) Let's talk shop!

3 - The Portland Trip: Aaron, Doug and I have been tossing ideas around, and we should have some updates by tomorrow! Be there!

4 - As the quarter is winding down we need to have a discussion next steps for the club; some suggestions have been brought to the forefront, and you need to be there to talk about them!

ATTENTION STARBUCKS ATTENDEES: A few items have been brought to my attention and will need to be discussed if you are wishing to come on the Starbucks tour. PLEASE come to club meeting on Wednesday if you are planning on coming to Starbucks on Friday. Also, we have several soon-to-be-graduates that want to go; if you are a newer student (third quarter or below) please note that you may be asked to give up your spot this time around to help out a student who will be graduating this year. (Please don't freak out, yet. Just know that stepping down this time may be asked of you.)

THIS WEEK AT GD CLUB: We will be having a rather brief meeting to touch base on a few items (including Starbucks and the notices below) and then plan on kicking back and watching part of the new documentary on Banksy, "Exit Through the Gift Shop." Keeping it quick and keeping it cool. See you then!

GD CLUB PARTY: March 24th, 7pm till midnight, across the street (exact address coming soon): plan on a relaxing evening with an incredible homemade Italian dinner made by yours truly, with dessert, games and movies. Be there....or we'll talk about you behind your back. Also, even if you missed EVERY meeting this quarter, you are still invited to the party. Come meet your fellow GDers, hang out and have a good time!

GET PAID FOR YOUR ART? NO WAY!:

Option 1) Every Graphic Design student can enter a design for "The Crying Spell" a local band. Any color, any style, any background - just make it rock, and show them how you view their music. The top three designers will work directly with the band to make it perfect, and, if your design goes to print the band will shell out $150. Great opportunity, cool portfolio work. Submit your designs in PDF form to me before March 1st.

FEB 18th - STARBUCKS: February 18th, 11 - 12pm. We only have three slots left - if you haven't signed up, you'll need to do it soon! There will be a tour of the studio, a chance to meet with some of the designers and a Q & A session! For those of you who are on the cusp of graduation, this is an awesome opportunity!

FEB 26 - JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER from AIGA: Saturday, February 26, 2011, 6:30PM - 8:45PM, PONCHO Concert Hall

Each year they invite a diverse panel of design professionals to speak to students and young professionals about career paths in design. This year's panel will share valuable insight about the interview process, what design businesses look for in portfolios as well as future employees, and useful tips for getting a job. They'll also talk about some of the varied possibilities in the design professions that they themselves have explored. Register at AIGA.org

So, we are moving quickly toward mid-quarter and the Graphic Design Club is busier than ever!

This quarter we are focusing on extending our knowledge base, and so much has been happening!

For starters, we just visited Wexley School for Girls this week, and were offered a tour and the opportunity to annoy them with every question we could imagine - and what an incredible experience!

For February we have Jesse Ledoux coming to speak with us (WOOT!) on February 9th, a trip to corporate Starbucks to tour their facilities on the 18th, and a potential trip to Portland on March 4th to visit the Art Institute of Portland!

We have also knocked on some doors and and have the opportunity to do an incredible mural this summer on the wall of the building across the street of the South Campus - sketches and ideas are bouncing around as I write! I can't WAIT to see what you all have planned!

Remember, Club this quarter is Wednesdays at 4:30pm in room #704 - Be there or be square!

...are filled with visions of sugarplums, relatives and napping. But school is still lurking around the corner....(insert theme music from Jaws)

A big welcome to the newbies, welcome back to us old hands, a huge "hope your time off was awesome and relaxing and rejuvenating!" to you all!

This quarter there a few things you need to know ahead of time:

First of all, GD Club is on Wednesdays this quarter; still in room #704. Make sure to spread the word and invite the new Graphic Designers to Club!

Secondly, last quarter we had several discussions about doing a mural in the school and now we need to decide what that's going to look like and where we're going to do it! We've got two weeks before our first meeting (January 18th), so break out those sketchbooks, hop onto Photoshop, and let me see what you've got. Remember, it needs to look awesome and also it should represent the Graphic Design Department! I know it's hard with holiday pie still muddling in the belly, but let's kick start those brain cells! :D

And lastly, we've got BIG stuff planned for this quarter - be there or be...um...well...square. :)

REMEMBER WHEN: First of all, a huge - HUGE - thank you to everyone who participated in "Remember When"!! :D Each of the pieces were so unique and everyone pulled together to put on an event that was more successful than we had even hoped! We raised double the amount that we had set as our goal, as well as exceeding our goal for number of entries! I am so proud of all of us!! We ROCK!

And the event is continuing!! Mark Livingston, the PR Director at AiS has offered us a booth at the Northwest Art Alliance Show!! It's great promotional and a really cool opportunity to keep this ball a'rollin'! We will have room for approximately ten to fifteen pieces. And it's due no later than November 8th! (yay! I mean....*pant, pant...Whew!) If you want to jump in with a random piece or two to add to the equation, please join us!

So, if you have a piece you'd like to put in, you can take it (and an application which you can get from the front desk or at GD Club next week) to Mark Livingston's office on the 6th Floor NC to submit it! And for those of you with sold pieces from Remember When, if your buyer was willing to let you have it back for the Burnley Gallery, I have the waivers and I will bring them to GD Club next week!

NEXT QUARTER: GD Club meetings will be moved to Wednesdays at 4:30pm in room #704 - adjust your schedules accordingly!

POSTER ART CONTEST: Check this out: "Please find the attached pdf file outlining the first ever Poster Art Contest for the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival. The winner will receive name recognition on 1500 posters and over 20,000 rack cards distributed throughout western Washington and be included in various festival press releases. The winning artist will also be featured on our website with a link to their home page, and will receive a $500 honorarium. Remember When - a Fundraiser to benefit Coyote Central: The Art Institute of Seattle's Graphic Design Club is stepping out to change their community this fall, one design at a time.

On October 21st, the Graphic Design Club will be hosting an art auction and raffle to raise money for Coyote Central, a local non-profit that brings hands-on art of all kinds to youth from across the city. The doors to Art on the Ridge (8005 Greenwood Avenue North) will open at 6pm, featuring student artists from the Art Institute of Seattle, a local jazz band and culinary delights. Local business are donating items that will be raffled off, so bring your change jar and be ready to win incredible prizes.

Join us for an evening of art focusing on a journey through childhood memories & fantasies, and help us bring art into the lives of the children of Seattle.

I would like to apologize that it's taken so long to send this out; I've been trapped in Finals-land, like many of you, I'm sure. Hang in there, we're in the home stretch!!

So, here's the headlines:

REMEMBER WHEN: is a GO! We have the space, the backing, the support, the advertising, the promotion...(*whew)...now we need the art work. On October 5th we are meeting in room #704 at 4:30pm to show off our compositions that will be turned in to the Gallery. We're going to be accepting critique and taking pictures to send to the Gallery. So you have the next week to tell all of your fellow students and the whole break to get your art piece finished! (I can hardly wait to see what you are all going to do!)

New York City & REMEMBER WHEN - Meeting of August 31st

NEW YORK CITY?: So, the New York City Trip is ON!! And here's the sitch: they only have room for sixteen people, they will take payments and they do not take monopoly money. I don't have ALL the details yet, mostly because they haven't been set in cement quite yet, but Aaron is on the case and will keep us informed. If you are thinking about a trip to NYC, please take a moment to hit up www.coverny.com and start researching which of the amazing GD Studios YOU want to visit! (It's also the place where you will be able to set up extra-curricular activities like eating hotdogs in Time Square, or going to a Broadway Show or hitting up the Empire State Building!)

Folks, I cannot even tell you how amazing this week has been! We have secured the gallery (Art on the Ridge in Greenwood, across from Modern Dog - thank you, Catherine!), have set up a meeting with the Culinary Club, have spoken with the band (still in consideration), and have gotten a "you guys are amazing for pouring into your community!" from both Mark Livingston (Director of PR for AiS) and Mark Notermann (GA: Creative)! We also have four local businesses (so far) that will be donating items to raffle off!

However, we have bumped into the exact same concern over and over....and not in a "this won't happen" way...more in a "this is going to be your biggest challenge" sort of way, and it's not an unreasonable concern: students have a LOT of other things going on in their world and the event will be low on the priority list. And this may be true. But, the response from all of you has blessed my heart; not only are you guys excited about the event, you want to create a new standard for student accomplishment! I love it!

So, here's the plan:

NEXT WEEK:

* Bring in your sketches, and be prepared to talk about what composition you are going to enter.
* Let's talk about a prize for the item that gets the highest bid at the auction.
* We'll also be discussing how to get the word out to the rest of the students, and how to invite them to be a part of this amazing opportunity!
* And we'll start the after part plans! (hehehehe....oh, there's planning to be done, folks!)

:D I will be bringing chocolate chip cookies; if you need to have a serious discussion, there should be chocolate!

"Fly me to the Moon" - Meeting update from August 24th

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we have learned a valuable lesson: Never hold a meeting where there is more than "hangin' out" happening at a local Starbucks. Great coffee! Couldn't hear a thing. :)

We had a good meeting this week; most of us left with a fire in our bellies and passing around ideas for the composition for "Remember When". The date has been pushed back to October 21st, officially, and I have some really cool news on that coming up next week! September 28th is the deadline for turning in compositions, so let's see what you've got!

The survey for poster design returned with the "Red Balloon" as the winner - it is being sent to several of our brilliant instructors for review and then posters, flyers and invitations will be on the way. I've also gotten some interesting news about our "Call to Action" posters, which I will share at this weeks meeting. Please, PLEASE come to this weeks meeting; we have a special guest who will be speaking directly to our up coming event.

There was also much discussion about visiting the gallery so that we can all see the location before we set up shop, as well as a potential outing to Pioneer Square to view all of the incredible galleries in the area. Anyone up for a first Thursday next week? Wander around Pioneer Square after class? Let's have that discussion this week as well!

Call to Action! Ba-ba-da-DAAH!

I hope you all are having a great week and that your Midterms came back WAY better than you thought they would! We've got a couple of things to give you a heads up on, not the least of which is that we still need seven people to sign up for AIGA! Take your envelope with $50 cash in it to Accounting (make sure it has your name, ID number and email address on it for reference. Otherwise it's just "lunch on the house" for some lucky staff) and it's due this week!! Otherwise we lose the opportunity to get this good of a deal on Membership! Scrape those pennies together, folks - it's worth it!

And now for the meat of the matter: (btw, I've got the song "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas running through my head every time I think of this event...)

THE EVENT:
We got a few things down in wet cement this week, at least as far as "Remember Me" is concerned. The whole club is excited with the prospect of this adventure, but we all wanted to agree that the most important factors of this project are 1) that we all have fun; 2) that we invest back into our community; and 3) that the Graphic Design Club of AiS starts getting their name out into the community as well! Once that was settled, the rest started to fall into place!

So, tentative dates and needs:

AUGUST 24th: Next Tuesday bring your "Call to Action" ideas to GD Club (or email them to me if you can't make it). These posters should say something along the lines of "Attention fellow artists! The Graphic Design Club will be hosting a Gallery Opening in October to raise funds for Coyote Central, a local non-profit that brings art into the lives of high risk youth in our community. We need your help! The theme for the event is "Remember When" - and the idea is that each composition brings with it a memory of childhood, whatever that may be. If you are an artist (graphic design, glass blowing, oils, acrylic, fashion, furniture, underwater basket weaving, whatever!) and you have a composition that you would be willing to have auctioned off to a good cause, please come and be a part of this event! For more information go to aisgdclub.blogspot.com or ask the Graphic Design Club student next to you! All compositions are due no later than September 28th." ....Or something like that. :)

Also, if you would like to submit a poster idea for Remember When, please send it to me at jessetheswingdancequeen@gmail.com no later than Friday, August 20th so that we can vote on it! Please and thank you!

SEPTEMBER 28th: Will be a workshop day. We will bring in ALL of our finished compositions for the show (if it's too big to haul into the classroom, just bring pictures.) and your vintage picture frames for painting. Spray paint will be provided, and we will all go out back where there is open air to avoid getting any higher than we want to....HAVE to. Sorry. :)

OCTOBER 7th (tentative): My responsibility this week is to track down and finalize the gallery that we are going to use. We have decided to see if we can partner with First Thursdays down at Pioneer Square, and if that doesn't pan out, we will try to partner with the Grand Opening of Coyote Central's new location the following week. So, the location is a little up in the air, but have faith. With a little fairy dust, the right conversations and some ruby slippers, we should be good to go!

I know it's only been three weeks, but the more I have gotten to know each of you, the more impressed I am with the talent, ambition and passion that this club has! Okay, I'm done.

So, an update, for all of you amazingly talented folks who are feeling out of the loop, and for all of us who need a reminder:

The Graphic Design Club is hosting an event at the end of the quarter (assuming we get the space in time) that will be a huge fund raiser for a local non-profit that works with art programs for high risk youth! This will be a very high end event, inviting everyone from our friends, students, other schools, and heck, let's invite the mayor, too!

We are going to host a gallery opening complete with live music, champagne, hors d'oeuvres and an auction to raise money for the charity we choose. We want to have students enter graphic art, paintings, sculptures, etc; The theme is "Remember When" - a journey into childhood. Every piece must be a childhood memory (good or bad, light or dark) and have that imaginative quality that made us believe in magic when we were kids. Christina even suggested "Why not a series that finishes the sentence? Remember when...your imagination was your best friend? Remember when...you first got inspired? Etc..." How COOL is that?!?!

This will be an incredible opportunity to get your name and face out there, connect with the grownups that we all want to be someday, and better our little corner of the world.

Remember, anything that's "GREEN" is bragging rights, so make sure that you keep note of anything "found" or recycled that you use.

And lastly, just because you haven't made to a meeting doesn't mean that you can't be involved!! We want you here!! We need your brains, your art pieces (yes, you can make more than one) and your passion!!

What we need (for now):
(1) Poster ideas (even if it's just a sketch on a napkin, folks!)
(2) Invitation ideas
(3) a final decision on the non-profit that we want to support
(4) you to get started on your art piece(s) that you want to auction off

The Journey of a Thousand Miles....

....and...something about a road....with weeds 'cause nobody's walked on it....hmmmmm...I may be mixing poderables again....

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came to GD Club this week - we packed the place, ate ice cream until we were dizzy with sugar intake and took some serious steps toward summer goals. And here they are: (for all of you who desperately wanted to come and for whom life just got in the way!)

We had an introduction of the new President (that's me!) and a chance to meet a lot of AMAZING up and coming Graphic Designers - both new and nearly all grown up! We had a volunteer for Vice President - Mr. Matt "Fargo" Pernack, whose enthusiasm is sure to keep things rolling in whatever direction we point him in! And, Jesse (that's Jesse #1) Diaz has offered to take the position of Treasurer using all of his talents of persuasion to keep the fundage flowing!

We talked about plans for this quarter - the goal is that we keep it laid back, for the most part. We did, however, have a few ideas officially sealed in ink: We are going to do a contest where we all have to learn to work together as a team (in case you haven't noticed, Graphic Designers don't share very well - this will be an awesome growing experience!) And, yes, there will be a prize for the winner! (think money, people!)

We are also going to be hosting a huge event at the end of the quarter - a Gallery Opening! We are going to do a fund raiser to raise money for that ever so important charity of...um......something. AND, we're going to fill the Gallery with our own art pieces to auction off! This is going to be an amazing opportunity to rub elbows with the people who you are going to want to work for, to get our name out into the community (AiS' GD Club needs to be KNOWN, people!), get some awesome work into our portfolio's and give back to the community!
Here's what we need for next week (so be pondering): We need to pick a local charity that we are going to support. We need to decided how we want to do it and then start talking advertising. (I've got a lot of experience with these kinds of events. The people that we are going to be working for LOVE to be a part of giving back to the community - and they need a TON of planning and advertising, so we've got to get started!)

...*whew......worn out yet?

And lastly, (well, sort of) I would really love it if the entire club redesigned our posters together. Attached you can take a look at the ones that I threw together a few weeks ago - I think they're so much fun, but I don't know that the point I was attempting to make came through. (or maybe it did - feedback me, folks!) Either way, I'd love for us to do them together!

NEXT WEEK: Tuesday, 4:30pm - We'll be meeting at the fountain next to the Sculpture Park (thanks for the brilliant idea, Kyle!), grabbing some chai tea, iced coffee, or ice cream from the little deli and then finding a place to plunk and talk more about our projects for this quarter! A hullo and a quick introduction from the new President of the Graphic Design Club AiS:

My name is Jesse Phillips (that's like Jesse James, only I am WAY cuter and a good deal more feminine than him....); I have some graphic design experience, am newer to the Seattle area (less than two years out of Chicago), am a swing and blues dancer and I can barely express how honored and excited I am to be a part of this amazing experience!

This is summer quarter, so we're going to take it a little easy this time around, but I have a few ideas and I can't wait to hear yours! I want us all to walk away from this quarter with some new friends, additions to our portfolios and some amazing experiences!

So, here's the plan: Tuesday, June 20th at 4:30pm, please join me in room #704 for root beer floats and a chance to meet each other, as well as make some decisions as a group on what we want to do this quarter!

THE END OF ONE CHAPTER AND THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT...

Hey guys,

Hope you all are having a great summer break. It's well deserved, so enjoy and relax before the new quarter starts. We're finally getting some sun!!!

As you all know spring quarter was my last term as President. After four quarters - of laughter, memories and friendships - I just wanted to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to making my run such a memorable one; to ALL of my officers, advisers and supporters - I honestly couldn't have done it without any of you!!! It's been quite the experience and journey. Some believe all good things must come to an end... I, on the other hand, like to think of it as the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. There is no "end" in growth, just simply change. And I've come to find change can be great.

Which leads to my next announcement... After searching and deliberating, I am proud to FINALLY announce the new President of the Graphic Design Club... drum roll please... JESSE PHILLIPS!!!
If you don't know Jesse, you will quickly take a liking to her. Her energy is infectious and you can feel her passion a mile away. Prepare yourselves club members, she is a firecracker (in the best possible way)!!! I'm so glad to be passing the paton to her. I feel she is going to be a great, new addition and will be able to take our club to the next level. So please welcome her with open arms. :)

I may not be the President, but I will definitely still be around, so please don't forget about me! haha However, I am taking summer quarter off, but will be back for my last quarter this fall. Vera Mural Program: Call for artists

The Ver(a)rt Gallery is pleased to announce a new mural program in the very heart of our gallery!

The site is the side of the upper stairway that leads down into the gallery space and into the main venue of The Vera Project. No previous mural experience is necessary! If you are interested in applying, send us the attached application form and some images, along with a resume OR artist statement OR bio. Websites are accepted as images, as long as you tell us very specifically what parts to consider. New murals will be installed two to four times a year. Some materials and a modest honorarium will be provided.

WHAT: From skateboards and comics to screenprint, stencils and paint, but not necessarily what you’d think.

Showing for the first time in Washington State, Dave Vander Mass (Portland), Giancarlo De Marchi (PA) and Tom Patterson (PA) are long-time friends coming together for a group show at Ver(a)rt Gallery, exhibiting both individual and collaborative works.

Dave Vander Maas - "I’m influenced by BMX and skateboarding and their respective cultures. I make art as a means to deal with whatever is going on in everyday life. My subjects are mostly symbolic and left open for interpretation by the viewer. My art is usually done in acrylic on found wood."

Giancarlo De Marchi - "I’m influenced by comic book art and skate graphics. I began in my youth by directly copying these images and gradually learned from this practice, applying these skills to my work now. My work is a collage of many of my drawings that creates a cohesive piece of art. I want my work to be subjective and for people to be able to interpret it in their own ways."

Tom Patterson - "The process itself of making art is most important to me; it feels like a meditative state when I am in my studio working. My work reflects the mood I am experiencing at the time, but my emotions are not more important than the image itself. I want to make work that is visually appealing for the viewer. I want my art to be viewed the same way I view art; that is, to look at it and not into it. My work is print based with a focus on screen print on paper."

Reality Check is an event designed for students and newcomers to the field: This is your opportunity to receive constructive portfolio feedback from experienced design professionals. At Reality Check you can show your work and ideas to some of the best art directors and designers in the Northwest. All you need to do it preregister—and bring your résumé and portfolio to the reviews. The portfolio doesn't have to be perfect—that will come after you incorporate the advice you’re going to receive at Reality Check. You’ll be able use this event to check your understanding of how to create a powerful design portfolio. Participants will receive at least a half dozen reviews, probably more.

This is a brand new venture for the Memory Book Division. They have never worked with
an arts college and are excited to collaborate with AiS. Elizabeth is confident that this
will be a positive new partnership.

We will be working with 25 different high schools / 25 clients.
Ideally each group will include:
- 2 AiS GD Club Students
- 1 Advisor from High School
- 5 or 6 Students from the 2011 yearbook staff

Expectations of GD Club:
We will work with Client individually for 45mins.
Goal: Listen to all their likes, dislikes, color choices, font choices, etc. Help fill in the gaps with
color choices, fonts, materials, etc. From there help create the look and feel for their yearbook.
The Cover is the big deal. The details of the rest of the book will be pulled from the theme /
ideology of the cover. 2nd priority = divider pages and folio placement. Overall goal is delivering
as many pieces as we can in the given time frame. [Another bonus: if deliverables could be
high-res jpgs, etc, in a few different files so that students can move artwork around on their own
as they continue to design the yearbook.
This is an opportunity to engage these students – should be fun, inspirational, educational.
(Elizabeth mentioned that for many of these students, going to AiS or a college of the arts is a
dream. This is an opportunity to make that goal a bit more tactile. We are going as artists,
ambassadors of AiS, mentors, and our silly quirky selves!

Are you feeling too thin or too heavy? Does your ascender look big in that typeface? Is your kerning all gappy? Does a river run through your body copy? Well, tighten up your leading, because AIGA Seattle Typography Boot Camp is for you. This intense, hands-on, crash course in typographic fundamentals will expose you to the core principles that will help whip your portfolio into shape and give you rock-hard ABCs. We’ll put you through your paces with a concentrated three-hour program consisting of introductory dos and don’ts, followed by a series of quick typographic workouts, each with a slightly different focus: Type Literacy Sprints, Typesetting Crunches, and Grid & Composition Burpees.

The event will be open to 45 people. Each workshop will be limited to 15 people; everyone will be able to take two workshops.

Workshop 1
Typography and its anatomy, classification, context, and history will help you become more discriminating in selecting typefaces and customizing logotypes. Led by Juliet Shen, Shen Design.

Workshop 2
Typesetting 101, covers kerning, leading, scale, headlines, and body copy. Led by Bryan Mamaril, Turnstyle.

Workshop 3

Week 4: Upcoming events.

So thank you Dave Danioth for doing the screen printing workshop on Wednesday, it was awesome. And thanks for volunteering to do it this week as well. So, if you missed the screen printing demonstration, Dave will be finishing it this week February 3, during club is the screen printing room.

Also, if you would like to take a look at Starbucks headquarters, we will be visiting them February 24th week 7. It would be awesome if you could let the committee know whether you are interested in going. If you don't have a ride, carpooling will be available, or the headquarters are located on 1st Ave. in SODO, you can take a bus along 1st Ave. it's about a 10-15 min. ride. The 15, 18, 22 and 56 go all the way down.

We still need logo ideas for GD Club. If you have anything, even sketches, they would be much appreciated. The logo should represent our school who we are as designers. It would be greatly appreciated if you could come up with some rough ideas to present. Thanks.

Also, Kim still needs at least 5 people to help out with the studio for our gallery coming up. We have 2 volunteers so far, but we also need 3 more. If you could lend an hour or less of your time, we would greatly appreciate it and it would keep things running smoother.

PIZZA PARTY TOMORROW!!! Yes, yes, we know you're not 5 but our end of the quarter party will not happen due to technical and political issues, however we'd love to hear from you what you'd like to do for next quarter. The Cliche artwork piece is still happening so keep working on it! The gallery is still in talks and we will let you know as soon as we have it worked out. So try to have it done by the end of break.

Here are a few contests comin' at you:

- AiS LIBRARY POSTER CONTEST - Be creative. Inventive. Spice it up.
Submissions due by Thurs. 12/10. Submit via email to the library or
submit on a disc to the library. Winner gets an iPOD.
- BOCONCEPT - Design your own "collector's cup" and submit between
11/20-12/24. Visit www.boconcept.us for more info!
- Keep working on your cliche artwork. Remember to finish them
by 12/02. Gallery space is still in talks. Make sure
your canvas size is at least 18"x24". The medium can be anything that moves you.

FOR THIS WEDNESDAY:
Please bring at least ONE piece of work that you've worked on or currently
working on, so we can have an open critique session. Also feel
free to bring stuff to work on - whether it be school work, art for
our gallery show, etc. It'll be an open workshop, so take advantage of
the time we have together.

Green Salon 3 will feature guest speakers Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins from Algaita as well as highlights via webcast from this year's Compostmodern event in San Francisco. AIGA and our sponsor Mohawk want to make sure you make it to this event, so it is free to AIGA members and only $5 for non-members.

Have you heard about the island of trash? This is a great opportunity to meet Algalita Marine Research Foundation who built a raft made from 15,000 plastic bottles and sailed from California to Hawaii during the summer of 2008 to bring attention to the issue of plastic marine debris. Hear in person what they have told to ABC News, Martha Stewart, NY Times and the TED conference about their extraordinary discoveries. They will be here in Seattle as part of their route travelling by bicycle from Canada to Mexico. Along the 2000 mile coastal route samples of plastic debris collected from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) will be given to legislators, educators and organizations--sharing Algalita's research and education programs with 1000's of people.

If you did not get chance to make it Compostmodern this will be your chance to see what you missed. We will showcase great speakers like Saul Griffith of Makani Power, Dawn Danby of Autodesk, Nathan Sherdroff the Design MBA Chair of California College of the Arts Emily Pillton of Project H and the Designers Accord.

She will also present the progress of The Designers Accord movement and discuss how participating design firms, educational institutions and corporations throughout the world are making change.

About Valerie Casey
Valerie Casey leads the digital experience practice at IDEO, where she provides strategic leadership for client relationships. Valerie works with organizations around the world to design products, services and business models that create positive social and environmental impact. She specializes in helping companies and other organizations understand, shape and ultimately capitalize on their internal and external networks to address cultural, economic, social and environmental challenges with greater agility.

Valerie founded the Designers Accord, the global coalition of designers, corporate leaders, and educational institutions focused on integrating sustainability into all practice and production. More than 150,000 designers and organizations worldwide now participate in the Designers Accord.

Prior to IDEO, Valerie was Executive Creative Director at frog design, where she led the global design research and design strategy practices. What is Reality Check?
Celebrating its 12th anniversary, Reality Check is an event designed to provide students and newcomers to the field an opportunity to receive constructive portfolio feedback from experienced design professionals. Reality Check is the time to show your work and ideas to some of the best art directors and designers in the Northwest. All that is needed is your registration, résumé and portfolio. The portfolio doesn't have to be perfect—that comes after you incorporate the Reality Check advice you're going to receive. Simply put, use this event to check your understanding of the basic principals and ideas behind creating a powerful design portfolio. Participants will receive four to five reviews, probably more!

What to Bring
A portfolio and résumé—and we're not talking perfect. 7-10 portfolio pieces at various stages of completion and the accompanying résumé you plan to use to get that first job or internship will do. You may present digital work on your personal laptop (remember to charge the battery!)

Dress to impress. Treat this as you would a real job interview, business casual recommended.

Have an open mind. Reality Check is all about the learning. The professionals we've invited are signing on to be your ally—they'll shed light on the basic principles and ideas you should consider in creating a more powerful design portfolio.

hey everybody! finals chaos! I know this is very late, but better late than never!

Mark Popich from Hornall Anderson came in last week and gave us a good presentation on why designers have one of the coolest jobs ever, and he talked about HA and what they do and what it's like to work for them. Next week we'll be having a pizza party (week 10) to celebrate the end of the quarter, and we'll talk about objectives for the following quarter.

Hey everybody! Crazy portfolio 2 happenings, sorry for the late post!

This week we had our alum Shanda Smith swing by and give us an awesome talk on her

career and advice for young designers. If you missed it, check out pixelsoupcreative.com (her own design company) to see some of her work. For those of you that did come, thanks for showin' up, and I think some thank-you cards are in order :)

We also were supposed to have preliminary designs for our postcard project this week (Ashley Newcomer had hers and it was awesome!) BUT not to worry! Finals aren't due til next week. If you want to have yours included, it HAS to be done by the time club starts next week! We're printing so get some cool stuff done guys!

For anyone who didn't show up (where'd you all go?? we missed you!) to club this week, you missed a fantastic time at our new Screen Printing room opening! You have to take a workshop before you can use the equipment and we'll have dates on that coming up. David Gallo and John Hillding did an awesome demo!

NEXT WEEK at GD club:

GUEST SPEAKER!!! Shanda Smith will be in and she starts at 4:35 SHARP. Be there! She's been an alum for about 2 years, became an Art Director, and has her own design firm called Pixel Soup (do a little reading before next week!).

CLUB PROJECTS:

Silhouettes- We have paper now! So next week we'll be talking about a time to meet, make and install our designs! BRING any DESIGNS you'd like to see and keep them pretty simple for cutting and tracing purposes.

Postcards- Initial designs for this project are due next week at club! Finals week 7. Can be hand-designed or computerized. Everyone who participates gets a packet of all the designed postcards. Make them awesome!

Specs- TRIM SIZE (actual postcard size once trimmed) 4.25 inches wide by 6 inches tall. BLEED SIZE (build graphics to this size if you want them to bleed off the edge) 4.75 inches wide by 6.5 inches tall.

Just a few reminders:

-Shanda Smith, our first guest speaker of the quarter, will be in on the 17th. Any other ideas for people you might wanna get in to speak, talk to Jared and Rachel at the next meeting.

-As you can see below, the new screen printing room will be having a "grand opening" little deal NEXT WEEK!!

-Seattle Show is the 26th and as of this morning, Renee doesn't need any more volunteers, but if you desperately want to try, she can put you on a waiting list because she's still trying to hear back from a couple people. It's $65 for students, and at Showbox SODO (and sadly, you have to be 21 to volunteer, not sure about attending).

-Shadow project.. Rachel will be talking to Melanie to see about getting us some black butcher paper for our silhouettes, and we might be working on them next week in class if that happens.

-POSTCARD project!! Design, design, design, and in two weeks, try to have yours ready. Can be handmade or digitized.

-More GD club poster ideas still welcome!

Ok so anyone looking to go to the EMP for the Hatch show, sorry about the misprint- first thurs. is NEXT week (the 5th). We'll be talking more about carpool etc next tuesday.

Brainstorming/sketches/gameplans that have to happen by next week's meeting:

-shadow project (movie stars? teachers? random people?)!!! (penny project is on the back burner for now, but remember your ideas if you come up with some for it too) we may try to do a saturday workday for this project. stay tuned! TBD.

-ideas for using our brown paper mural created last quarter

-any guest speakers you think of that we should try to bring in

-fundraising for bringing in bigger guest speakers

Hey everybody! Sorry it took a couple days to get this up! SO!

News from this quarter's first meeting on tuesday:

NEXT THURSDAY the club is planning on going to the Hatch Show Print exhibit

@ EMP at 6pm. Carpooling/meeting times will be discussed next tuesday. Since it's

first thursday, it's FREE. Take advantage of this and GO!! (normal admission to EMP

is somewhere around $20 usually).

Also, we need everyone to brainstorm ideas for new GD Club posters! Come up with some cool ideas and bring them in preferably printed out on 8.5 x 11 paper to the next meeting so we can make some progress :)

More brainstorming is also needed for our guerilla art piece (in the school? somewhere downtown? one idea we talked about was chalk art around the city), and it was also brought up that we have access to several display cases in the school for any art of our own we'd like to put up. Talk to Dexter @ the next meeting for more about access to those!

As far as AIGA membership- we talked about contacting them if you still haven't received your membership card or book, and if you keep having trouble with that, keep Rachel posted so we can do something about this.

You will get chance to look at new printing technology and join the green conversation with printers and paper companies. Get some great ideas on how you might change your processes with printing to be more sustainable.

The first speaker is Bob Akers a paper rep for Xpedx. He will be talk about the state of recycled papers and FSC certified paper. What are your options? Do these papers cost more? What will be important for my clients to hear?

The second speaker will be a member of CCS’s sustainability council. They will review the printing process and the steps designers can take along the way for being more sustainable and fiscal. This information will include insight on ink, sheet size, varnishes, fulfillment and finishes.

Located in Nashville, Tenn., Hatch Show Print has made an undeniable impact on poster advertising and graphic design. Opened in 1879, the shops largest clients included vaudeville shows, state fairs and the Grand Ole Opry. Today, Hatch Show Print continues to use the same woodblock archives it used for carnivals in the 1800s to advertise everything from current politics to White Stripes concerts.

The Vera Project is having their annual Bring it Screen it event where for $5 dollars you can print a cool design on a shirt you bring in or one purchased at the event. The designs are created by local screenprinters, designers, and artists. One of which being your's truly. Also, their bazaar is going on at the same time so you can score some sweet crafted art type stuff for you holiday gifts.

Vera Project call to artists/designers...

The Vera Project (Vera) non-profit, all-ages art and music venue located in the Seattle Center is hosting its annual Bring It, Screen It/Bazaar on December 6, 2008.

Bring It, Screen It is a fundraising event Vera puts on every year where silk screen artists can submit a Vera Project logo, and community members can pick their favorites from the bunch to screen on whatever articles of clothing they bring (or buy at the event) for just $5! Along with the screening event will also be a Bazaar for craft artists to sell their wares.

All proceeds go directly to Vera's silk screen program to ensure that it remains open, available, and low cost for the greater Seattle art community!

In order for this event to be successful, we need artists and designs. If you are interested in submitting a design, or if you know anyone who is interested in submitting a design, please email me. Feel free to forward this call to any artists you know who may be interested as well. Any one is welcome to submit!

Here are the basic logo guidelines:

Designs must include "Vera" or "Vera Project" somewhere in the design.
Content of designs must be suitable for general audiences.
Designs will end up being screened in one color only for ease of printing, especially for inexperienced screeners, so color should not be a main factor.
Dimensions need be no bigger than 8.5 X 11.
Be aware that these designs are donated to Vera. Since this is a fundraiser, artists will not be paid.
Designs are due by NOVEMBER 21ST.

A limited selection of these posters have been printed for national distribution and we are excited to be displaying the full set of 24 posters at the Second Saturday Ballard Art Walk on October 11. This is a free event and open to AIGA members and the general public, so please encourage your family and friends to attend!

So, yo, peeps!

Back to the grind this week, back to the fun next week! Graphic Design Club's first meeting will be next Wednesday from 4:30pm - 5:15pm. Come. Join us in the pleasantries.

To kick things off, we will be having a Marshmallow Robot Building contest next week! That's right peeps,... I said Marshmallow Robot Building contest. We will have marshmallows (large and small) and toothpicks provided. The rest is up to you!!! 1st place gets a prize!

Also, don't forget, we have a sign up sheet for students joining the AIGA. If we get a group of 20 or more students to join, the fee is only $50 per student instead of the usual $75! So let me know if you want to join the AIGA and we'll get you on the list.

The Wexley School for Girls speaking event at the Henry Art Gallery is only weeks away. It will be held on Tuesday, October 21st at 7pm. This should be a fun night. AIGA is inviting faculty, students and recent graduates to participate in the Aspen Design Challenge, an annual call to students worldwide to help solve global issues.

The inaugural contest, “Designing Water’s Future,” challenges cross-disciplinary student teams to develop design solutions that encourage responsible water use, provide access to freshwater to those in need and increase awareness about the importance of water conservation.

The rules and guidelines are now available on the Aspen Design Challenge website. Winners will have the opportunity to refine and develop their concepts with world leaders and policy makers at the Aspen Environment Forum, and their solutions will be discussed during the World Summit on Climate Change.

Print design, web applications, environmental design, physical devices, data presentation tools and other approaches are all accepted. Design students are encouraged to lead teams that may also include engineers, artists, ethnographers, anthropologists and scientists, and to consider the social, cultural and scientific significance of water use.
